Driver CPC is a Certificate in Professional Competence for professional bus and truck drivers. Its purpose is to set and maintain high standards of safety and driving among drivers of trucks and buses. Driver CPC is being introduced in Ireland because a European Union law, Directive 2003/59/EC, states that professional drivers must receive ongoing periodic training. This is a course that has to be done by each driver of a minibus and bus who are driving for hire and reward as well as community transport.
This course has five modules. Each driver must complete one module a year for five years. No two modules can be done in one year.
The modules include:
Module 1 - Control of the vehicle and Eco-driving techniques.
Module 2 - Minimizing risks and managing emergencies in the transport industries
Module 3 - Health and Safety of the professional driver
Module 4 - Role of the professional driver in the transport industries
Module 5 - The professional truck driver
Module 6 - The professional bus driver
When will Driver CPC will be introduced in Ireland?
Driver CPC has been introduced in Ireland:
Bus and Coach: 10th September 2008
Truck Drivers: 10th September 2009
Who will Driver CPC apply to?
Driver CPC is relevant to both new and existing drivers.
For existing drivers
People that have a full licence before the 10th September 2008 for buses and the 10th September 2009 for trucks, will automatically have Driver CPC without having to take more tests. In order to keep this Driver CPC, each driver must do 35 hours of periodic training (seven hours per year) over the next five years.
For new drivers
People that have not got a full licence before 10th September 2008 for bus drivers before 10th September 2009 for truck drivers will have to participate in the Driver CPC examination. The examination includes:
- 2 hour multiple choice theory test,
- 2 hour case study theory test,
- 90 minute driving test,
- 30 minute practical test
Once this is completed and passed the four parts of the Driver CPC examination, the driver can then apply for a driving license and Driver CPC card in that category. After this, the diver will have to do 35 hours of periodic training (seven hours per year) over the next five years to keep their Driver CPC.
Notes will be given on each day on all material gone through. The course days run from 8.30 to 5.30.
