FLEXIBUS - Self Drive
Self Drive

Introduction

A self drive is a service for community groups or individuals that do not work for Flexibus but have an appropriate full drivers licence to have use of one of the vehicles for an agreed amount of time. Buses are allowed to be used as long as the individual or group who takes the bus do not collect fares i.e. take the bus as a volunteer driver and it is not for hire and reward.

What size buses fo Flexibus have?

Flexibus can offer buses from 8 seats to 18 seats. This means that if you have a B (car), D (coach) or D1 (minibus) licence you can avail of the service. All buses on the fleet are wheelchair accessible. If you have wheelchair users on your service, training will be given at the offices of Flexibus as to how to operate the lift and clamp down wheelchairs. As and from the 10th September, we would ask that any drivers with a D or D1 licence wishing to avail of the "Self drive" service are up to date with their Drivers CPC.

First time users of the service

We would ask that all individuals who avail of this service come into Flexibus before their planned travel date with their drivers licence. Flexibus also require all drivers to go for a drive with our driving assessor so that they can familiarise themselves with the vehicle. There is no charge on this. Flexibus will ensure that a bus is available for this drive before the date of travel, but we would ask that Flexibus are given two weeks notice to book this time on the bus.

My group have never used Flexibus before.

We would ask that the leader of the group comes into Flexibus with the driver to fill out a community group membership form and go through the procedures of taking a bus on a self drive.

What is the procedure for taking a bus?

A week before the self drive

We would ask that the community group phone up at least a week in advance of the self drive. This is to ensure that there will be availability for the bus on that day.

The day of the self drive

Before the group come to collect the bus, Flexibus will have the bus filled with fuel On the day of the self drive (or on a Friday if the self drive is for over the weekend), the driver should come in and collect the key and sign the contract. Bus Check Every time a bus is taken on a self drive, a bus check must be carried out. These sheets will be given to the bus driver of the self drive. A bus check must be carried out EACH DAY of the duration of the self drive. Provider Sheets All self drives must fill in provider sheets detailing passengers that have travelled on the bus.

On return of the vehicle

We would ask that on returning the vehicle that the group could refill the bus with fuel and ensure that the bus is fully clean inside and out.

Cost

There is no cost to hiring a "Self drive", but all groups can make a donation towards the upkeep of the bus if they choose.

Insurance

All drivers that take out a bus on a self drive will be covered through the Flexibus Insurance policy.
